Dear Friends,
Many thanks for the parcels that have arrived safely. Even though there has been a postal strike the parcels have all been kept safely and delivered safely to us. It is great to sort through parcels and be able to get the materials ready for the beginning of term and for the new PEPEs that will be starting.
We have had a very busy July. There have been 5 trainings of new teachers, Missionary Educationers (ME), in the south of Brazil and other trainings in the North East. We have many more PEPEs opening in this part of the world!
I was in Britain during most of June to attend the Graduation of Ben and to visit Lindy and Bruce. The graduation was a very happy occasion and Ben was thrilled he had passed his BA Hons. in Graphic Design and Interactive Media. He had worked very hard having returned to Britain when he was 17 and had to start all his exams again, as in Brazil he had been in an American school which he didn't finish. So after 6 years he finally reached his goal. Now he has managed to get a good job in the Southampton area so Stuart and I have much to thank God for.
Whilst in Britain I was able to visit our home church in Worthing and be present at their presentation of the visit that a team from the church made to Brazil and Paraguay in May. The visit proved to be a success both for the churches in Brazil and for Worthing.
I also had the privilege of accompanying Carol Haydon and J ane Hawkins from Coney Hill Baptist Church on a trip to Romania. Carol & Jane along with Piroska from Romania had visited Brazil in April to attend a training in how to start and run PEPEs. The trip to Romania was requested by the Convention of Hungarian-speaking Baptists in Romania to see if it would be possible to start PEPEs amongst the gypsy communities. The outcome was that the first PEPE should begin in the 2nd week of September! If the PEPE goes well and helps the gypsy children, it can be planted in many other communities. The children are in great need of preparation for school both socially and educationally to enable them to enter the local schools. So please pray that the programme will be a success for the children and the churches in those communities.
Whilst I was in the UK, Stuart was visiting BMS work in Peru & Ecuador. He also had the privilege of travelling in north Peru with one of the PEPE coordinators and seeing the PEPEs in that area. He was thrilled to see how the PEPEs are helping the growth and commitment of the churches as well as helping the children and the communities. Please continue to pray for these communities.
Again, many thanks for your generous gifts and please thank all the people who have spent hours knitting, buying, collecting the gifts and parcelling them all up. They are really appreciated by the children communities and the teachers.
Every blessing,
Georgie & Stuart
Cornerstone is involved in the work of the Baptist Missionary Society (BMS) by supporting Georgie & Stuart Christine (left, with their own family) based in Sao Paulo, who are working with children in the favelas (slums).
In particular, members here have been knitting clothing for the young children, to allow them to attend the “PEPEs” (similar to pre-school), and then move on to full-time schooling.
Below is their most recent letter, with a link to their BMS August Prayer Letter here...
